2 – The Collection

School and public library youth services staff should provide varied, quality reference and nonfiction materials that compliment and supplement the school curricula as well as answer children’s curiosities.

Staff should provide and recommend quality and interesting materials for beginning readers as well as the more facile readers, consequently making reading fun and ensuring continued skills development and enjoyment.

Staff should provide and recommend a wide variety of materials, both fiction and nonfiction, to meet the varied interests and developmental levels of readers.

In order to ensure a well-rounded, well-used collection, staff needs to be aware of reliable review sources, be aware of new fiction trends and titles, and needs to constantly monitor and maintain the collection to ensure quality and high use.

This course will either introduce or serve as a review to basic components of creating and maintaining a school-aged collection.
